1. When is the birthday celebration?

2. Where are the celebrations taking place?
 

  • The celebrations will take place in and around Porto, Portugal.



3. What is the best way to travel to Porto?
 

  • By Plane: The nearest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), located about 20 minutes from Porto city center. This airport offers both international and domestic flights, with regular connections to major cities in Europe and beyond.

  • By Train: Porto is well-connected by train to other major cities in Portugal, including Lisbon, Coimbra, and Braga.

  • By Car: If you’re traveling within Portugal, renting a car is a great way to explore the country at your own pace.

 

5. What should I wear for each event?

6. What else can I do in Porto?
 

  • Explore Porto’s Historic Center: Take a walk around Porto’s UNESCO-listed historic center, visit the famous Livraria Lello, and take in views from the Dom Luís I Bridge.

  • Wine Tasting: Porto is home to some of the best wine cellars, and a visit to the Port Wine Cellars is a must for wine enthusiasts.

  • Ribeira District: The historic neighborhood of Ribeira is perfect for a
    stroll along the river, with quaint cafes and restaurants offering delicious local cuisine.

  • Day Trips: If you have time, consider a trip to the Douro Valley to explore its vineyards, or visit the Coimbra and Évora for a taste of Portuguese history and culture.
     

 
7. What currency is used in Portugal?
 

  • Portugal uses the Euro (€). You can easily exchange your currency at the airport or withdraw euros from ATMs in Porto and other major cities. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most places, but it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially for small shops, markets, or tips.

 

8. Will there be
vegetarian or vegan options for meals?

9. Do I need a visa to travel to Portugal?
 

  • At this time, no travel visas are required for guests traveling
    from the US to Portugal, but we’ll be sure to keep everyone informed should that change.

  • ***Please make sure that your passport is not expired or close to expiration - you will need a valid passport issued within the last 10 years that should remain valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date 



10. What is the weather like
in July in Portugal?

 

  • Weather in June: The weather in June is typically warm and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F). Porto tends to be cooler than southern Portugal (the Algarve), but it’s still quite pleasant. It’s a good idea to pack light, breathable clothing for the day and something warmer for the evening, as temperatures can dip a little. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses!

 

11. What essential items should I pack
for my trip to Portugal?

 

  • Essentials to Pack: In addition to your usual travel necessities (passport, charger, etc.), here are some items to consider:

    • Comfortable shoes for walking
      (Portugal’s cobbled streets can be tricky).

    • A swimsuit if you plan to visit the beach or a hotel pool.

    • Sunscreen and a hat for protection from the sun.

    • A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.

    • Adapter for European power outlets (Portugal uses type C, F, and E plugs, and the standard voltage is 230V).

    • Medication or any essential personal items, as pharmacies might be closed on Sundays.


 
12. What is the best way
to get around Porto and Portugal?

 

  • Public Transport in Porto: Porto has an efficient metro, bus, and tram system, which is easy to navigate. Tickets are affordable, and you can purchase them at machines or stations.

  • Taxis and Ride-sharing: Taxis are available, and ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt operate in Porto and other cities.

  • Renting a Car: If you plan to explore areas outside the city, like the Douro Valley or coastal regions, renting a car is a good option. Just be aware of Portugal’s traffic laws, as fines for speeding and traffic violations can
    be quite strict.
     


13. Is there anything else I should know
for a smooth trip to Portugal?

 

  • Language: While Portuguese is the official language, most people in tourist areas speak English, especially in Porto. Learning a few basic phrases like “olá” (hello) and “obrigado/a” (thank you) can go a long way!

  • Time Zone: Portugal is in the Western European Time Zone (WET), which is the same as the UK. In summer, Portugal follows Western European Summer Time (WEST), which is GMT+1.

  • Don’t forget to try some delicious pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) while you’re here!
